TWO DAY COURSE Throwing with David Frith

Hosted by internationally renowned potter, David Frith, this outstandingly popular two-day course will cover all aspects of throwing with practical demonstrations and hands-on sessions using Shimpo RK10 Potters Wheels. All levels of ability are catered for and you will throw a wide range of bowls, platters and jars as well as lidded forms. David will deal with many aspects of surface pattern direct onto the newly thrown form, including faceting, paddling and rope-impressed design. He will also demonstrate two-piece throwing to enable bigger jars and bottles to be made. This is a very popular course and places are very limited due to the nature of the tuition (max.10 places) so please do book early. Please bring your own apron & towel and, if you wish, your own tools. Pots can be fired for collection or delivery at a later date for a small fee - please ask for details.

Introduction to Mayco Brush-on Glazes
Mon 16 & Tues 17 May
 
A fun and informative full-day "hands-on" workshop presented by a specialist tutor from Mayco Colors who will be travelling from the USA to introduce a myriad of techniques and surface effects and demonstrate the correct application of our wide range of Mayco brush-on glazes. Let your creativity run free with a series of specially planned projects. You are very welcome to take home your finished pieces at the end of the day.
 
The course will be repeated over two consecutive days: The first day will consist of general projects aimed at Contemporary Studios, Ceramic Cafés and individual craft ceramists. The second day will offer specific projects aimed at education (Schools, Colleges etc.) and so will be ideal for teachers, tutors & technicians. However, everyone is welcome to either course.
 
 
 
Introduction to Brush-on Glazes
Raku Kiln Building with John Wheeldon
Tues 14 June
 
A full day demo only course hosted by internationally renowned raku artist, John Wheeldon. The morning session will incorporate a demonstration of how to build a raku kiln using sheets of ceramic fibre and galvanised mesh. The afternoon session will offer advice regarding firing the kiln and firing demonstrations. Please book early as places are very limited due to the intensity and content of the course. We highly recommend that this course is booked together with Raku Glazing & Firing for a comprehensive introduction to Raku. For safety reasons, please ensure that flat, sturdy, closed-toe shoes are worn. The kiln built on this course will be available for sale at the end of the course on the second day - please ask for details.

Raku Glazing & Firing with John Wheeldon

A full day course following on from Raku Kiln Building, incorporating demonstrations and plenty of hands-on opportunities. The course will cover glaze preparation and application, and kiln firing. Please book early as places are very limited due to the intensity and content of the course. Pots for glazing will be provided, but please feel free to bring one or two of your own small low-fired (920 deg C bisque) pots if you wish. For safety reasons, please ensure that flat, closed-toe shoes are worn. You are very welcome to take home your finished pieces at the end of the day.

TWO DAY COURSE Sculpture with Neil Dalrymple
Tues 19 & Wed 20 July
 
Immensely popular for the past two years, this informative and fun two-day course begins with a step-by-step demonstration on how to create a scene as subject matter for a ceramic sculptural relief (mural) approx. 60x30cm in size using the clay slab technique and hand modelling. You may choose to use either a design provided by Neil, or alternatively if you would like to bring along some sketches of your ideas he will offer guidance in creating your own design. During the course, colouring and firing options will be discussed in more detail. When completed and fired, the mural may be wall mounted as a finished piece of artwork. Examples of Neil's work can be seen, as well as photographs showing his range of sculptures.

Glazing & Firing

An invaluable introduction to glazing and firing including basic glaze technology, glaze preparation/adjustment, mixing and the use of opacifiers, colouring pigments etc. A highlight of the course is extensive practical demonstrations of dipping and other application methods on various shapes, and decorative techniques including wax resist, masking etc.. Firing cycles and glaze faults are discussed in detail. Teachers and ceramics technicians in particular will benefit from this outstandingly useful seminar which represents excellent value for money due to its popularity. Hosted by Harry Fraser, author of 'Glazes for the Craft Potter' and 'The Electric Kiln'. Also, Kevin Millward - renowned potter and demonstrator at Gladstone Pottery Museum, and John Beeston - Technical Manager at Potclays.
