Anniversary Open Day
August 29, 2017
There's a telegram for you...
It's been a long time coming, but we can finally announce the details for our 85th Anniversary Open Day on Saturday 30th September 9.00-3.00pm!
We would like to extend a warm invitation to friends & customers, old and new, to join us for this very special event 9.00-3.00pm.
We are delighted to welcome "Major Tom" of the Pottery Throw Down Series 1 to host four blindfold throwing contests over the course of the day. Take on your fellow potters in a battle to throw the best pot whilst blindfolded. Winner (chosen by Tom) takes home a prize worth £20. No peeking! Booking essential!
In between the contests, Tom will be demonstrating his throwing skills in the upper showroom throughout the day. If you fancy a go, just ask!
Free of charge drop-in product discovery workshops with Mayco tutor Crista Toler, taking place all day 9.00-3.00pm. Discover the magic of Mayco! Demonstrations will include Mayco Designer Silkscreens, Stamps and Mats. Learn to use these creative tools to add detail and texture to your bisque and clay projects.
Our factory tours are the perfect way to find out about where your clay comes from and the love, attention and hours and hours of work that go into each and every bag of clay. See our unique panmills in operation and learn what makes our clay so special. There will be two tours, both of which need to be booked in advance at this link.
TALKS & PRESENTATIONS
We are excited to have Tallie Maughan, founder of Turning Earth, with us to speak about "Makerspaces & The Future of Craft". Those of you who visited ICF Aberystwyth this year may have attended Tallie's talk there. Turning Earth is an open-access ceramics studio that opened in East London in 2013. The first of its kind in the U.K., it has since grown to serve over 300 members and 300 students every month across two different sites. In her talk, Tallie explores the concept of the makerspace and how this model can enable more people to participate in craft. Tallie will share the steps she took to open Turning Earth and some innovative methods that the organisation has developed to solve common challenges. More details and booking at this link.
Lisa Hammond, founder of Adopt a Potter, will be speaking about the newly opened Clay College at Middleport Pottery, their story to date and plans for the future. Clay College offers a skills-based, full-time ceramics course taught by potters who make a living through ceramics, something unique in the UK. From September 2017, a two-year full-time course will be run for 14 students, with each year consisting of three 15-week terms. The emphasis will be on core skills and the use of materials. More details and booking at this link.
James Otter, a director of Potclays, will host a short anniversary presentation "Grounded in the Past, Looking to the Future" before the first factory tour outlining Potclays' history and heritage, how the company has evolved over the years, and our hopes and ambitions for the future. More details and booking at this link.
