Massachusetts (USA) based artist, designer, and ceramicist Molly Hatch will visit London in September to launch a brand new giftware range for department store, John Lewis. Whilst she is in the country, we have arranged for her to travel to Stoke-on-Trent to host an exclusive, not-to-be-repeated surface design workshop at Potclays.
Molly Hatch began her career as a studio potter, infusing her tableware and home decor items with contemporary sensibilities and classical charm. The daughter of a painter and an organic dairy farmer, she draws from the beauty of everyday objects by imagining where each will live. With a formal education in ceramics and drawing, Molly launched her first tableware collection from her home studio in 2010. Her signature blend of 18th century aesthetics with modern whimsy quickly garnered a loyal following, launching her brand into a wide range of lifestyle products for the home. Today, Molly Hatch collections can be found through the brand's partnerships with almost 30 gift and home goods companies. More about Molly at mollyhatch.com.
This two-day hands-on workshop is for those with some clay experience looking for new and exciting ways to approach surface decoration. We will explore ways to approach surface decoration and its relationship to form in your ceramic object making. We will begin by walking through some basic surface design concepts and discuss inspiration and ways to find your muse. Learn how to source and translate 2-D patterns and images into surface decoration. This workshop focuses on learning a wide range of surface techniques, from using Molly’s favourite pressure transfers on greenware and bisque to doodling, stamping, resists, carving and painting on the surface of clay.
Potteries Museum & Art Gallery Visit: Join Molly for an optional museum visit on Monday afternoon (September 17th) to spend a couple of hours perusing and sketching from the museum collections. The Potteries Museum & Art Gallery has one of the largest ceramics collections in the country, and surface design inspiration aplenty! The exact time to meet will be given in the email sent in the week prior to the workshop so please make sure you look out for this. The museum is open Monday to Saturday: 10am – 5pm; Sunday: 11am – 4pm. Admission is free of charge.
