AMACO Crawls Cone 5/6
Explore AMACO Crawls for bold, textured glaze effects at cone 5-6. Designed to pull back during firing, these glazes create raised patterns that reveal the clay or colour beneath, with plain and speckled finishes for varied decorative surfaces.
Create Textured Surfaces with AMACO Crawls
AMACO Crawls are cone 5–6 glazes designed to bring ceramic surfaces to life with unique, spontaneous patterns. Traditionally seen as a glaze flaw, this range deliberately embraces the effects of crawling.
Crawling occurs when the glaze pulls back from the surface during firing, creating a textured, uneven finish that reveals the underlying clay body or other glaze layers. Use these glazes on their own or layer them over underglazes or other cone 5–6 glazes for dynamic effects.
How Application Shapes the Crawl Effect
Application thickness lets you vary the finished texture. Thinner coats can produce finer beads, while additional layers encourage larger raised shapes. This gives you scope to explore delicate surface detail or a bolder, more pronounced pattern.
Colour beneath the glaze also becomes part of the design. A contrasting base can emphasise the gaps between glaze patches, while similar tones create a subtler effect. Plain and speckled finishes offer further variation in the final surface.
AMACO uses synthetic bone ash, and its clay and glaze products are vegan.
Why Choose Potclays?
Our glaze selection gives potters scope to explore unusual surfaces, with underglazes and decorating accessories to complement their work. We can help you understand how application thickness and your base-layer choice influence a crawl finish.
