China Clay Powder for Ceramics

China clay, also known as kaolin, is a fine, white-firing ceramic raw material used in clay bodies and glaze formulations. A source of alumina and silica, different grades of china clay offer properties suited to applications including porcelain and other clay bodies, slips and ceramic glazes.

If you’re following an existing recipe, check which material it specifies before choosing your ingredients, as the properties of different china clays can vary. Refer to the individual product information below when selecting a china clay for your formulation.

Using Kaolin in Clay Bodies and Glazes

China clay is an important ingredient in many ceramic bodies, particularly where a light firing colour is required. Different grades offer varying levels of plasticity, so consider the requirements of your recipe and forming method when choosing a product.

In glaze formulations, kaolin provides alumina and silica and can help suspend raw glaze materials. Changes to the amount or type of china clay used can affect a glaze's behaviour and fired result, so test adjustments before preparing larger quantities.

Begin with a small test batch when introducing kaolin to a recipe or adjusting an existing mixture. Weigh ingredients carefully and record each addition. When comparing variations, changing one ingredient at a time will make the results easier to assess.

Choose a smaller quantity for initial experiments, or consider a larger pack once you’re happy with your formulation.
