Some metal kidneys offer a serrated edge to help produce more defined contours.

Common uses for steel kidney palettes include scraping, shaping, and smoothing both hand-built and wheel thrown clay, and compressing clay to remove air pockets. Palettes can also be used as a squeegee for applying decorative transfers onto clay or as a press to press clay into a desired press mould.
