Create Metallic, Iridescent and Crackle Effects

Mayco Raku glazes are formulated to develop metallic lustres, iridescent colour and crackle effects through the raku firing process. The finished surface can vary considerably depending on the glaze, clay body, application and reduction conditions, giving each firing its own character.

In a typical raku process, glazed ware is removed from the kiln at high temperature and transferred to a container with combustible material. Reducing the available oxygen helps develop the distinctive colours and surface effects associated with these glazes.

Applying and Firing Mayco Raku Glazes

The following application recommendations are based on the original product development intent and use.

Shake and stir well before use. Apply to bisqueware according to the individual glaze instructions, keeping the bottom of the piece free from glaze, and allow it to dry thoroughly.

Mayco Raku glazes are fired to cone 06 (approximately 1010°C), with Mayco recommending a five-minute hold before removal and reduction. Thinner glaze applications can encourage stronger metallic effects, while the clay body, glaze thickness, firing temperature, combustible material and reduction process can all influence the finished result.

Using a thermal-shock-resistant raku clay body can help reduce the risk of cracking. Minimising the distance between the kiln and reduction container can also help develop metallic colours.

Once the piece has completely cooled, cleaning with water and a scouring pad can help reveal the lustre and colour of the fired glaze.

Raku Safety and Dinnerware Use

Raku involves high temperatures, flames and smoke, so suitable protective clothing, heat-resistant gloves and eye protection should be used. Reduction should take place outdoors, and an electric kiln must be switched off before ware is removed with metal tongs.

Mayco Raku glazes are not recommended for dinnerware and should be used for ornamental pieces.
