Monitor Your Firing with Orton Pyrometric Cones

Monitor Your Firing with Orton Pyrometric Cones

Pyrometric cones have been used to monitor ceramic firings for more than 100 years. They can help you determine when a firing is complete, identify differences in heatwork within the kiln and recognise when a firing has not progressed as expected.

Made from carefully controlled ceramic compositions, cones soften and bend as they are exposed to heatwork during firing. Their final position provides a visual indication of the combined effects of time and temperature in the kiln.

Important: Do not confuse cone numbers prefixed with a 0 (zero) with those without. Cones with a leading zero are used for lower-temperature firings, while cones without a leading zero indicate considerably higher firing conditions.

More details are available on the Orton website.
