Pearly Surfaces with Crystal Variation

A satin finish with a pearly sheen gives these glazes their distinctive appeal. Fine crystals can create mottled patches across the surface, with iridescent effects developing where glaze gathers more thickly. This variation brings interest to broad curves and simple forms, from rounded bowls to sculptural vessels.

These glazes work well on both white and brown clay bodies. Pale clay can provide a lighter backdrop, while a darker body offers another way to explore the relationship between colour, crystals and the finished surface.

Layering and Blending for Different Effects

These glazes offer two ways to combine colours: mixing shades before application or layering one over another. Blending allows you to develop a personal palette; overlapping coats can introduce contrasting patches and varied textures within a single piece.

Their fluid character also makes them appealing for combinations with compatible, less mobile glazes such as AMACO Celadons or Satin Mattes. The balance between layers can influence how colours merge and flow, giving each combination its own appearance.

Application thickness also affects crystal development and movement. A thicker application may encourage stronger effects, although excessive glaze can produce a rougher surface or heavier flow. The range is intended for cone 5–6 firing, with cone 6 recommended for results closer to the manufacturer’s examples.
