Manufacturing Methods of Prepared Clay Bodies

Bodies marked with a 'P' are finished by our Panmilling technique. This production method gives excellent, reliable control of grog and water contents, but is inherently more open to occasional larger or extraneous particles arising in the ingredients or during processing. It generally produces better moisture control in grogged bodies.

Bodies marked with an 'S' are Sliphoused bodies. These are prepared in very large batches in slip form, which is finely sieved prior to or after grog addition. The purified slip is then pumped into presses for dewatering before pugging. Sliphousing gives greater product uniformity and virtually guarantees freedom from contamination, but it is more difficult to control the grog contents due to settling from suspension and moisture content. It is the best technique for smooth-textured bodies.

Bodies marked with a 'PB' are produced by a Plastic Blending process, which yields bodies offering the high purity and cost effectiveness of a sliphoused product together with the ultra-tight control over grog additions offered by the panmilling process.

Decorating and Casting Slips

Our ceramic slips are perfect for adding decoration and texture to your pottery. Decorating slips are ideal for staining and creating designs on your clay bodies before firing, while casting slips are finely prepared for smooth pouring into moulds, creating beautifully detailed pieces with minimal effort.

With a wide firing range for versatile use and suitable for a variety of decorative techniques, these slips are easy to apply to any clay body.

Grogs and Other Body Additions

Grogs and other body additions like silica sand are essential for improving a clay's workability, durability and texture. Grogged clay bodies also help to reduce shrinkage when fired. Our range includes several grogs ideal for potters looking to add a bit of grit or texture to their projects.

Whether you're throwing or handbuilding, our grogs and assorted additions are the perfect solution for enhancing your clay's properties. For example, if you need to improve thermal shock resistance, you can by adding to the body of your clay.
