Smooth and Sanded Terracotta Clay

Our red terracotta earthenware clay is soft, yet robust enough to handle being thrown on the wheel or used in handbuilding. With a consistent plasticity and a smooth finish, this clay product supports both functional pottery and model making. Designed to fire within temperatures of 1040°C to 1170°C, this clay has reduced risks of warping and cracking during the firing process, and offers a rich colour when fired.

For a clay with more texture and durability, our sanded terracotta body provides a great choice. Incorporating carefully graded sand to enhance strength and reduce shrinkage, this material is perfect for larger pieces or sculptural projects that demand firm bases. Despite the added texture, the clay is still easy to work with and responds well on the wheel and during handbuilding.

Using Terracotta Clay

Economy terracotta clay has a range of purposes, and is ideal for art, crafts, and practical pieces. They are appreciated by ceramicists for their compatibility with a range of glazing techniques and decorative effects such as sgraffito. Other decorative options for terracotta include oxide washes, slips and underglazes.

The affordability and quality of this body make it a popular choice across educational settings, for hobbyists looking to explore the natural beauty of this kind of clay blend and for large-volume product production.
