In autumn 2025, Warwick Arts Centre opened Tea Bowl Punk, the most comprehensive exhibition to date in Europe by the Japanese artist and master ceramicist Takuro Kuwata. Inside of the exhibition and alongside Kuwata’s bulbous ceramic forms is a studio space curated by Modern Clay – an artist collective based in Digbeth, Birmingham. Generously supported by Potclays, the studio is open daily and invites audiences to get closer to Kuwata’s sculptures by having the opportunity to create their own ceramic vessel. Modern Clay have developed a series of prompts which support makers to produce their own Japanese chawan or teabowl using a pinch pot method – the chawan is at the heart of all Kuwata’s sculptures and has a long history with Japanese ceramic practice.
We are hugely grateful to Potclays for supporting this exhibition.
The exhibition and studio are open Tuesday – Sunday, 11am – 8pm.
