Mayco Classic Crackles© (Cone 06)
Classic Crackles© are a distinctive range of brush-on glazes formulated to produce a characteristic crazed surface – a delicate network of fine cracks that adds antique charm and visual depth to ceramic work. Developed for Cone 06 firing, these glazes can be fired to Cone 6, though some variation in the final effect is expected. Whether highlighting carved details or adding vintage aesthetics to smooth forms, Classic Crackles© remain popular for ornamental ware of all styles. Browse options below.
How to Use Classic Crackles©
Before use, shake the glaze thoroughly and apply it with a broad, soft brush. For the best results, apply three even coats to properly fired shelf cone 04 bisque, then fire to shelf cone 06. As the piece cools, the glaze naturally forms its characteristic crackle pattern. To enhance this effect, you can rub acrylic or ink into the surface after firing, wiping away the excess so that the colour settles cleanly into the cracks.
All Classic Crackles© glazes are certified AP Non-Toxic when used as directed, making them suitable for artists of all ages. However, due to the crackled surface's fine crevices, which are difficult to clean, they are not recommended for dinnerware or items intended for food use. While they may pass lead and cadmium leach testing, the porous nature of the underlying ware can lead to water absorption over time. Therefore, these glazes are intended for decorative or display pieces.

Brush-on Crackle Glazes
Within the Classic Crackles© range, potters can choose from soft, subtle tones or cleaner neutral finishes. Transparent produces a classic all-purpose crackle effect ideal for antiquing sculptures, tiles, or slip-trailed patterns. White offers a traditional crackled porcelain look, giving forms a softly aged aesthetic. China Sea and Green Tea bring gentle colour variations, producing crackled surfaces washed with cool blue-green hues that deepen when enhanced with ink. All colours are suitable for both small decorative projects and larger studio work.
These glazes pair well with underglaze decoration, texture carving, and layered surface design. When fired, the crackle pattern responds beautifully to added colour washes, allowing for further creative control over contrast and depth.
