Kiln Shelf Props
An essential part of any kiln furniture kit, kiln shelf props offer strength, stability, and height, allowing you to create safe, efficient stacking arrangements during the firing process. The right kiln props ensure your shelves sit level, your heat distribution remains even, and your projects are supported adequately from start to finish, regardless of the clay body. Our range includes both square and tubular kiln props in a selection of heights, offering potters the flexibility they need. Browse the selection below.
What are Kiln Shelf Props?
Kiln shelf props are refractory supports that are used to raise and stabilise kiln shelves during the firing process. By placing three props beneath each shelf, you can create a strong framework that spreads the load and withstands high temperatures, allowing multiple layers of ware to be fired in a single cycle.
Props maximise kiln space and improve workflow while helping to prevent shelves from warping under weight or heat, ensuring firings remain consistent, and your kiln furniture and projects remain protected.
They are made from durable materials that withstand repeated high-temperature firings while retaining their shape, and can be used in both top-loading and front-loading kilns.
Types of Kiln Props
We can offer both square and tubular kiln props so that you can choose the configuration best suited to your loading requirements.
Tubular Props
Tubular props are rigid tubes, approximately. 38mm in diameter, which can be extended in height with interlocking extension props. Interlocking extension props are useful for interlocking and extending the height of our tubular props.
Our tubular kiln props are a versatile choice for most firing setups. Their hollow construction helps reduce weight while maintaining high compressive strength, making them suitable for supporting even heavier sculptural pieces. Tubular Collars/Bases may be used at the top (collar) and base of a tubular prop column at the junction with the kiln shelf to spread the load.
They can be used individually or, where required, paired with tubular collars and bases to create stable, adjustable heights in more demanding stacks. Because tubular props are easy to handle and lightweight, they are helpful when potters need to make fine adjustments to shelf height.
Castellated Props
Castellated props are turreted, approximately 38mm in diameter, and interlock to form a very stable propping system. Available in 25mm or 38mm extension height.
In many studios, these props offer a great way to add stability at the junction between props and shelves. The castellated design allows props to align securely with complementary recessed discs, helping to distribute weight and reduce the risk of slipping.
These props are most relevant for potters aiming for very stable results across multiple layers.
