About
Cobalt Oxide Co3O4
The most powerful of ceramic pigments, giving a range of transparent blues ranging from intense blue or blue-black in lead and leadless glazes to a vivid blue in alkaline ones. The carbonate form is weaker, but gives less risk of specking.
Colour responses after firing:
- Painted onto clay: Black
- Painted onto biscuit: Black
- Painted onto unfired glaze: Blue if diluted enough
- Mixed into glaze: Blue if low quantity or black if excessive addition
- Reduction firing: Generally no change
Please note that these are the typical results, but combinations of oxides will produce different results depending upon the relative percentages of each used and the firing conditions in the kiln. Also the underlying body colour will influence the resulting colour.
