Buff to Off-White Clay for Throwing, Modelling & Handbuilding

Buff and whitish clays are highly versatile, offering a neutral base that is perfect for showcasing glazes, decorating slips, and surface texture. The soft, light colour achieved by bisque firing or firing at high temperatures allows for great levels of artistic expression.

The exact colour achieved by the clay depends on the specific recipe and the firing temperature. Some clays may be suitable for firing at earthenware and stoneware temperatures, while other clays will be designed for specific firing ranges. To achieve buff colours, a lower kiln firing temperature is needed, while the clay can achieve off-white or light grey colours at higher temperatures.

These clays are suitable for throwing, can be used as modelling clay, or can even be used in handbuilding large sculpted pieces.

Specialised White Colour Clay

Looking for smooth white clay? Our buff to off-white clay can achieve a range of whitish colours from a light yellow to a creamy ivory. Alternatively, you can browse our range of white clays.

Our off-white selection is versatile, spanning across smooth body clays and grogged options to suit a range of artistic needs. Whether you're building by hand, at a wheel or casting into moulds, you'll find a clay to suit your needs.

For refined forms and crisp detail, a smooth textured clay would offer the benefits you require and as well as low shrinkage during firing. Smooth clays are good for throwing and highly versatile. Structural or sculptural pieces utilise fine or coarse grogged clay, with the grog improving strength, reducing cracking, and increasing resistance to thermal shock.
