About

Apache Red Micaceous Body 920-1000C | Recommended Firing Range: 920-1000ºC (cone 09-06)*

This clay recipe was developed by Felipe Ortega of Apache descent. It reproduces the old tradition of micaceous clay pottery from over 400 years ago. The body is composed of white mica and low coefficient red clays. Mica offers elasticity and a unique appearance. Authentic Apache characteristics are achieved when the clay is wood fired. Supplied in a 12.5kg bag.

Please note: Apache is traditionally left unglazed. Standard glazes will craze on this body due to the low thermal expansion of the body. Low expansion glazes will be better suited.

Indicative Texture 2 (Smooth 1-Coarse 10)

[04/23] Due to quarry closure and therefore unavailability of two key ingredients, Apache has been reformulated. The raw colour is now more orange. Every effort has been made to retain the working and firing properties but users may notice some differences therefore testing is advised.

SIO2 Technical Data

  • Water content: 22%
  • Plasticity (IP Atterberg): 24
  • Carbonate content (CaCO3): 0%
  • Drying shrinkage: 5.8%
  • Firing shrinkage (950ºC): 0.3%
  • Porosity (water absorption at 950ºC): 12.9%
  • Dry bending strength: 5.9 N/mm2
  • Fired bending strength (950ºC): 19.5 N/mm2
  • Thermal coefficient (25-500ºC): 58.8x10^-7ºC^-1"

(*) Firing range recommended for the clay to develop its best performance, both in terms of technical and safety characteristics, under conventional firing conditions. The colour samples may show temperatures outside the recommended range to provide a broader view, but these are pieces fired under controlled conditions.

To comply with RHA regulations concerning tail-lift deliveries (where there is no fork-lift truck available at the delivery point) the maximum net weight of clay we are now permitted to pack on standard pallet is 950kg (76 x 12.5kg bags of clay). To achieve the best price for your clay, please add the full 1000kg to your cart when checking out and we will make the necessary weight adjustment/refund when we receive the order.

We have added cone numbers to our firing ranges for guidance purposes. Please refer to the 60c/hr column for large regular or self-supporting cones on the Orton Cones Conversion Chart which can be downloaded here.
