Why is my bright gold lustre dull?

This is most obvious with the bright gold but can happen with any lustre. The surface is matt and sometimes discoloured.The problem is one of scumming because the kiln was not adequately ventilated during the firing. This can sometimes be rectified by refiring and ventilating the kiln more effectively, but quite often the more expensive lustres begin to burn away.
