What is Raku Firing?

Originating in Japan, raku firing is known for producing striking visual results and for its hands-on, spontaneous nature. Pottery is moved from the kiln at high temperatures, often around 900°C, and placed into combustible materials like sawdust or paper to cool. This rapid cooling process produces metallic sheens, crackled glazes and smoky finishes that make every piece one-of-a-kind.

Raku firing is ideal for potters who enjoy experimentation and want to embrace the unpredictable beauty of flame and atmosphere.

The Difference Between Raku Kilns and Normal Kilns

Unlike standard electric kilns, raku kilns are typically gas-fired and built to withstand quick heating and open removal of pieces during the firing process. Raku kilns tend to feature ceramic fibre insulation, strong steel frames and secure lighting mechanisms to allow easy, safe access during reduction.

Raku kilns are designed for speed, ventilation and temperature control, enabling potters to achieve consistent, creative results without any compromise on efficiency or safety.
