What is Kiln Insulation?

Kiln insulation refers to the refractory layers that line a firing chamber and protect the outer shell from extreme temperatures. Materials such as ceramic fibre wool and insulating fire bricks create a thermal barrier, allowing kilns to reach and then hold firing temperatures without requiring excessive energy use.

Ceramic fibre blankets are particularly popular for use in electric and gas kilns because they can withstand continuous use up to around 1260°C - all while remaining easy to cut, shape and install.

What are the Benefits of Ceramic Fibre Insulation?

Using ceramic fibre insulation offers several advantages over heavier, more traditional kiln linings. Its low thermal mass means the kiln heats up and cools down more quickly, saving time for the operator. The fine fibres in the material provide excellent heat retention, helping to improve the stability of the kiln's temperature and reducing overall fuel costs.

Ceramic fibre blankets are also lightweight, therefore placing less stress on kiln lids, doors and structures, helping to prolong the life of other components. Supplied in manageable rolls or sheets, they are easy to handle, shape and install. When paired with dense fire bricks, they can create a balance between durability and insulation performance.
