October 2024 Update: Due to unprecedented global demand, Spectrum Glazes are having difficulty fulfilling distributors' orders. They are working on putting measures in place to increase production and storage capacity, which could take 4-6 months. Thanks for your patience and understanding.

Bronze, Iron and More from Spectrum

Spectrum’s metallic colour range includes rich bronzes, patinated greens, bright golden tones, and atmospheric darks. Options like Green Patina, Moonlight, Green Mirror, and Wrought Iron offer a variety of appearances, from glossy mirror effects to weathered, matte patina finishes.

These Spectrum metallic glazes perform best at cone 05, where the application thickness significantly affects the result. A generous 3–4 coat application is recommended, as the metallic oxides, often copper and manganese, develop their true character when applied heavily. These metallics break, shine, and react differently depending on the clay body, creating subtle variations on white clay and deeper tones on darker ware.

Gloss and Matt Metallic Glazes

Spectrum’s metallic glazes come in both gloss and matte finishes. Shades like 151, 152, and 153 produce a glossy finish, giving off a reflective, almost liquid-metal effect. In contrast, 154, 155, and 156 deliver a more matte, industrial-style metallic surface.

While these glazes are lead-free, they’re not dinnerware safe because they contain heavy metals such as copper and manganese. They’re best suited for decorative ceramics rather than functional tableware. Potters appreciate their versatility, as they allow them to explore metallic surfaces without relying on genuine metal leaf or lustres. Customer reviews consistently highlight their reliable brushability and strong metallic character.
