Potclays Gold range

Potclays’ EP and GK Gold ranges are made in our factory in Stoke-on-Trent. They share the same characteristic robust construction using a solid angle iron frame for long life rather than the folded steel sheet favoured by some other kiln makers. The framework features an integral stand and houses ventilated sheet steel panels for reduced external temperatures. There is one spy hole in the door (multiple holes to special order) and a vent in the roof. The kilns are attractively spray finished in grey, heat and rust resistant paint.

We use ultra-efficient refractory brick together the latest back-up insulation and for the Gold range, we have increased the insulation making a total wall thickness of 150mm. This gives more efficient firings, reduced heat loss, lowered external temperatures and surprisingly low firing costs.  GK kiln’s elements are made with the Ceramic Industry standard, Kanthal A1 elements fitted to both side walls and hearth.

Controller

ST215 Controller is supplied as standard, it is intuitive and easy to use having 32 adjustable programs with 32 segments per program, over temperature safety cut off and diagnostics. Suitable for all ceramic and glass applications.  Optional WiFi & USB Data Log are available.

Maximum Firing temperature

Our maximum firing range is also expressed in Orton cone numbers to take account of heatwork, for example, 1300°C and cone 10. Please note that long soaks at higher temperature could exceed the kiln specifications and invalidate the guarantee; always check with cones when firing at higher temperatures.

Support

our 80 years’ experience with kilns is backed up by a 3 year limited warranty, technical support phone line and email together with service engineers able to install and repair kilns on your premises. Each kiln is hand built by our team of specialists, we are able to customise the design of the kiln to suit your needs right down to the side the door opens and the colour of the kiln. All our elements are wound by hand onsite to the exact specification of the kiln and spare parts can be supplied at very short notice. As the only UK manufacturer producing clays, glazes and kilns under one roof we are in the prime position to advise on a wide variety of ceramic manufacture.

Health & Safety Considerations

All service and maintenance work on the kiln must be carried out by a competent person.

We advise against working in the kiln room while the kiln is firing. Ceramic materials produce fumes in the firing, and the body of the kiln will heat up to approximately 150°C generating heat in the room, it is therefore important that plenty of fresh air is moving through the room. We recommend installing an extract fan capable of 20 air room changes per hour The kiln room must be clear of all flammable materials, nothing must be placed on top of the kiln, especially the kiln controller.

Positioning the kiln

Please ask for advice about positioning your new kiln, there are important considerations such as:

  • Ensuring that the floor is strong enough to carry the weight of the kiln.
  • The kiln should be not less than 250mm from the nearest wall.
  • Minimum of 750mm from the ceiling.
  • Allow 500mm space behind the kiln and a gap on one side sufficient to provide easy access to the rear of the kiln for servicing.
  • The wall isolator, (power switch) must be easily accessible.
  • If required, we can supply a kiln cage to safely and securely enclose the kiln to prevent access by unauthorised people.

Delivery

Please discuss delivery options before ordering, in some circumstances we may arrange delivery by carrier or we can deliver and install including electrical connection to existing supply. It is important to ensure that you have sufficient room to access the final location. In some cases, kilns may be able to be stripped down and assembled on site to fit through narrow doorways etc. We can send you a kiln delivery questionnaire which asks for information on the route from vehicle to final position. We will be able to quote for delivery when we have all the relevant details.
