  • The Maker
Bristol Broomworks is a one-woman heritage brushmaking business based in the Chew Valley, Somerset. Founder Jamie is self-taught in pre-industrial broom-making - no electricity, no machinery and works from a barn studio on a working flower farm. In 2025 she was named a Country Living Top 40 UK Artisan.
Every brush in this collection is made start to finish by Jamie alone, handcrafted using techniques that predate mass production entirely: fibre bundled and shaped by hand, bindings wound rather than machine-stitched, each brush individually finished.

    The River Collection
Each brush in this range takes its name from a British river: the Severn, Mersey, Thames, Derwent, Tay, Trent, Wye and Avon.
The pairing isn't decorative. Water is essential to both slip and glaze, and hakeme - the technique these brushes are built for - exists to move it across the surface of a pot. Naming each brush after a river ties the tool to the substance it works with, and to the landscape that substance comes from.
A few of the rivers share more than a name with their brush. The Severn and the Wye rise on the very same mountain, Plynlimon in mid-Wales, then run apart for their entire length before meeting again at the Severn Estuary. The Trent and the Derwent - Bristol Broomworks' two most established makers of textured ceramic surface work - join at a place called, fittingly, Derwent Mouth. The Avon, the river of Jamie's own home ground, flows into the Severn itself.

    River Source to Sea
The Severn Plynlimon to the Bristol Channel - 220 miles
The Mersey Born where the Goyt meets the Tame - 70 miles to the Irish Sea
The Thames Thames Head to the North Sea - 215 miles
The Derwent Bleaklow to the Trent at Derwent Mouth - 50 miles
The Tay Ben Lui to the North Sea - 117 miles
The Trent Biddulph Moor to the Humber - 185 miles
The Wye Plynlimon to the Severn at Chepstow - 155 miles
The Avon Near Acton Turville to the Severn at Avonmouth - 75 miles

    Why This Range

  • Genuinely hand-tied, not machine-made - every brush carries the maker's hand, not a production line
  • No metal components anywhere in construction - nothing to corrode against clay or slip; embossed detailing is achieved with leather stamps instead
  • Natural fibres chosen for performance: broomcorn for the slip brushes and the majority of the specialty range, Tampico for the Severn, and a blended broomcorn, Tampico and Arenga mix for the more heavily textured Mersey
  • Two distinct constructions across the range - bundled/forked specialty brushes and single-bundle slip brushes - giving potters real variety in mark-making
  • Backed by recognised UK craft heritage: A member of Heritage Craft and a Country Living Top 40 UK Artisan, 2025
  • Supplied exclusively to Potclays - this range is not sold direct or through any other retailer
  • Bristol Broomworks · Chew Valley, Somerset · Handcrafted in the UK
