About
Cupric Carbonate CuCO3
SAFETY NOTE: Copper compounds must not be incorporated into any low solubility glaze if the resultant glaze is to be used on domestic wares in contact with foods. There is no problem with copper in leadless glazes. Many potters wrongly believe the problem with copper in leaded glazes to mean that copper is toxic in all glazes. Copper presents no hazard whatsoever no matter what form the copper is (except copper sulphate which is poisonous). The problem is the lead ions which are displaced from the glaze matrix by the copper ion.
Colour responses after firing:
- Painted onto clay: Black
- Painted onto Biscuit: Black or green if thin
- Painted onto unfired glaze: Green
- Mixed into glaze: Green
- Reduction firing: Red
Please note that these are the typical results, but combinations of oxides will produce different results depending upon the relative percentages of each used and the firing conditions in the kiln. Also the underlying body colour will influence the resulting colour.
