About

What are Mayco Micro Glazes?
"Micro" is short for "microcrystalline" which is a glaze that develops small crystallization from the the zinc and silica during the cooling process. Micros do not actually contain a glass crystal like our other stoneware crystal glazes. Rather, the effect is created by the glaze itself during the firing process. These glazes can be fired from cones 5-10, but the crystallization may not form at higher temperatures. The micros are not dinnerware safe due to surface durability, with the exception of the Micro Pearl. We recommend using micros on the outside of dinnerware, below the lip line or on decorative wares.

Cone 6 oxidation (larger image): Micro Champagne is a glossy, translucent amber glaze with a mauve float that breaks over texture. Blooms of shimmering gold micro-crystallization will develop during the firing process.

Cone 10 reduction (smaller image): Glaze darkens.

TIP: This glaze is fluid at 3 coats. Recede application to avoid unwanted runoff. Due to the translucent nature of this product, be aware of your application consistency and thickness to avoid streaky brushstrokes. We recommend firing our micro glazes to cone 6 oxidation to reach crystalline development. Micro Champagne achieves a stable, semi-opaque, golden-amber result that breaks over texture and has a pearlescent satin finish when fired to cone 5. Can be used in oxidation or reduction firings. Results may vary. The choice of clay body, thickness of application, firing process, and temperature will greatly affect the fired results. Always test your application on your clay body in your kiln environment.

General Use

Use Mayco Stoneware Glazes on any midrange clay body. These glazes are intended for use at cone range 4-6 but are also stable and pleasing at cone 10. Can be used in oxidation, reduction or other alternative atmospheric firing conditions. Always test prior to use.

Mayco's Stoneware Dry Mix glazes contain the same ingredients as our premixed formulas (leaving out viscosity thickeners and preservatives) and are ideally suited for spraying and dipping application. For best results: Gently tumble unopened bag to remix materials. Mix 1 pound of dry material to 1 pint (16 oz.) of water. Thin or thicken as needed. Our dry blends feature uniform and very fine particle sizing; sieving should not ne necessary. For best glazing results: Dipping - stir well right before dipping piece. Immerse the piece for 2-3 seconds; let dry for 3-5 minutes before applying additional coats (optional). Please read and observe the safety precautions on the back panel.
