About Rollers and Guides

Clay rolling pins are essential handbuilding tools crafted from wood, used specifically for rolling out clay into sheets. Similar to a traditional kitchen rolling pin, these rollers are designed to meet the unique requirements of sculpting and shaping clay, such as optimum weight, texture, thickness, and moisture resistance. A key feature is their smooth, non-stick surface, which helps prevent the clay from tearing during the rolling process. Available in both small and large sizes, clay rollers are typically handle-free to allow potters to apply even pressure across the clay surface.

To maintain your roller, keep it dry when not in use to preserve its natural texture and ensure longevity.

Guides are a key pottery tool in ceramic handbuilding. When you're using a rolling pin, utilising a guide can help you make consistent, professional-looking slabs or tiles every time. Using it as a bumper for your rolling pin means that you can keep your ceramics at the guide height every time. They are available in sizes from 7mm to 15mm.

Adding Rolling Pins and Guides to Your Kit

Adding rolling pins and guides to what may be an already extensive kit of sculpting tools and modelling tools can help you to elevate your handbuilding.

Whether you're looking to build vases from curved slabs, cut beautiful tiles and mosaics or want to attempt making repeatable products from the same design mould, these tools can be a valuable ally to help you to refine your craft. Both hobbyists and studios can find a number of uses for these pieces of equipment.
