Laura Adkins draws on her background as a graphic designer, painter and illustrator in her passion for ceramic sculpture. Her work can be 3D or relief using slab construction, or mosaic/assemblage using sculpted tiles. Her sculpture explores form and symbolism, ideas that are ancient, cross cultural and still capture peoples’ imaginations today, her own ancestry and heritage, and British folklore. Laura’s work is rooted in research, travel, photography and drawing. She balances planning with improvisation so that her sculpture can evolve and surprise her. Laura experiments with decorative approaches but favours Potclays craft crank clay, oxides and gas-firing to give her work an ancient or rustic look. Laura is also a writer, and uses her sculpture, research and photography in her art blogs.
