Manganese Dioxide MnO2
Synonyms: Manganese Oxide, Mangalox, Manganese Ore
Black, finely ground powder giving sepia or grey-brown colour in lead and leadless glazes with plum or purple colour in alkaline tin ones. With cobalt, or cobalt and iron, produces good black.
Raw colour of powder:Purple/Brown
Colour responses after firing:
- Painted onto clay: Dark-brown
- Painted onto biscuit: Dark-brown
- Painted onto unfired glaze: Brown, sometimes plum depending on glaze make-up
- Mixed into glaze: Brown, sometimes plum depending on glaze make-up
- Reduction firing: Brown
Please note that these are the typical results,but combinations of oxides will produce different results depending upon the relative percentages of each used and the firing conditions in the kiln. Also the underlying body colour will influence the resulting colour.
