The Use of Mini Pyrometric Bars

Mini bars are easy to position due to their uniform shape, allowing consistent placement without affecting the kiln’s firing behaviour. This makes them ideal for beginners, who will appreciate their ease of use, while experienced ceramic artists will value their stable, repeatable heat measurements. When a bar bends under heat, it provides a visual reference that the target temperature has been achieved.

Whether working at Cone 017, 01, 06 or the mid-range bars such as Cone 10, these Orton pyrometric mini bars help you monitor kiln firing performance across batches, kilns, and firing schedules.

Differences Between Bars

Each bar corresponds to a specific cone number, reflecting a distinct temperature range and the amount of heat required to bend it. Standard cones are typically displayed upright in plaques, while Orton Mini Bars are laid horizontally inside a Kiln-Sitter®. This design ensures that the bending action triggers the shut-off mechanism at the correct point, providing your work with the proper amount of heat rather than relying solely on a set temperature per hour.

Different bar numbers are suited to various clay bodies, glazes, and firing processes. For instance, lower bars are ideal for lustres and low-fire glazes, while Cone 6 and above are suitable for stoneware firings. Their compact shape makes them perfect for potters with smaller kilns or those who prefer minimal handling and straightforward placement.
