Small Orton Cones
Small Orton Cones offer potters a compact and reliable way to monitor heatwork inside the kiln, especially when space is limited or when using kiln-sitters and specialist holders. As part of the trusted Orton pyrometric cones range, each small cone is manufactured from carefully controlled compositions that bend predictably at specific temperature ranges. Small Orton Cones remain a staple in studios where precision, consistency, and repeatable results matter. Browse our range of cones today.
Small Pyrometric Cones for Limited Space
These pyramid-shaped ceramic devices, known as cones, measure heatwork accurately by combining temperature and time. They are commonly used under the sensing rod of a kiln, where a softening and bending cone signals the correct firing point. The tapered shape of the cone allows flexibility in adjusting the shut-off by placing the thinner or thicker portion upward, giving potters finer control over firing rate and final heatwork.
When available space is tight, miniature witness cones can also be placed on the kiln shelf. These cones offer a visual reference for bend behaviour alongside pyrometers or digital controllers. Although slender, Orton cones are designed to deform at the correct heatwork level. They will also bend if soaked, slowly at first and then more decisively as temperature and time increase.
How to Separate the Cones
Small Orton Cones arrive in pairs rather than as individual cones, and before use, each pair must be separated. To do this correctly, hold the joined cones firmly at the base using your thumb and index finger. Then give a gentle, controlled twist. The cones will easily come apart without stressing the ceramic material or affecting the bend's accuracy.
Once separated, each cone can be placed under the sensing rod, in a holder, or on the kiln shelf as a miniature witness cone. Proper handling ensures you maintain the integrity of the cone and achieve reliable results when monitoring the cone’s tip bending and overall heatwork.
