Hake Brushes
Hake Brushes (pronounced Ha-keh) originate from East Asia, and Japan and China in particular. They were traditionally used for Japanese ink painting, watercolour and at times, calligraphy - but have found a home in the world of pottery and ceramics. They are primarily used for applying glazes, slips and oxides, but can also find work in helping to make clay damp or to clean or dust surfaces without damaging the project. These tools are often found in educational settings and both professional and amateur studios or workshops. Browse our range of Hake brushes below.
Our Hake Brush Range
At Potclays, we offer a selection of traditional hake brushes designed for use in ceramics and pottery. We offer three types of brush, 1", 2", and 3", which cater to various needs.
The smaller brush is suitable for detailed work, while the 3" brush is ideal for efficiently covering larger surfaces with water, glaze and more. The 2" brush offers a balance between the control of the smaller brush and the coverage of the larger brush.
Hake Brush Uses
Hake brushes can often be found where ceramic artists are wheel-throwing or handbuilding projects. For vessels requiring a glaze application, or even slips or oxides, potters may find that a hake brush is the best tool to do so. These liquids are applied evenly and efficiently across wide areas in fewer strokes thanks to soft hake brushes.
If you're joining components to your work and need clay to be damp before doing so, these brushes are perfect for that. With flat, fan-like bristles, they offer a broad surface area to cover a wide area of work.
Brushes Suitable for All Experience Levels
A hake brush is suitable for both beginners and professionals, offering precision, control and a smooth finish. Especially useful where speed and consistency are required, these brushes are made with fine goat hair bristles that can hold a significant amount of liquid. Perfect for wetting surfaces or applying large areas of glaze or oxides, the soft hair brushes are suitable when looking for tools that won't disturb any delicate textures or fine detail work.
