AMACO Kiln Ice Cone 5/6

Modelled after traditional Guan Ware - ceramics prized for their distinctive crackle and subtle, translucent surface - these glazes are thick, cool-toned and designed to build texture and visual depth. The glaze is thick by design, forming pooled icy patterns over clay bodies, whether used alongside an underglaze or a slip, or left to interact naturally with the projects.

Suitable for a wide range of pottery styles, the collection is ideal for potters seeking a glaze for projects that offer both heritage and contemporary appeal.

The characteristic crackle of these glazes comes from the coefficient of thermal expansion - the relationship between how the glaze and clay body expand and contract during firing. Thin applications produce tight, delicate lines while thicker applications result in large crackle patterns. With these glazes, thicker tends to be better!

Apply three to four coats, building to at least 3.175mm, as multiple thinner layers are preferable to a single heavy coat. Between coats, allow the surface to fully dry as added gums slow drying when the glaze is thick.

For the best results, fire to Cone 5 or Cone 6. These glazes are food safe, but due to their durability, they’re not recommended for direct contact with food. Instead, use a liner glaze inside functional ware.
