High-Quality Clay Bodies
High-quality buff clay bodies combine strength, plasticity and predictable behaviour during both forming and firing. Buff clay sits between a pale stoneware and terracotta in colour, offering a light to mid-toned fired surface. This natural aesthetic makes buff bodies ideal for potters producing functional tableware or domestic ware, as well as sculptural pieces.
Some buff clay bodies include carefully graded grog or sand, which improves their resistance to warping, cracking, and thermal shock - especially when making larger forms. The texture can also be adjusted with grog to provide a coarse feel for sculpting or a smoother finish for wheel throwing. When formulated with reliable fireclays, the body remains stable, strong and workable.
Updating the Potclays Premium Buff Recipe
Our Premium Buff Clay bodies represent the next evolution of our long-standing recipes. Our popular buff clay recipes, which had to be discontinued in March 2022 due to the unavailability of a staple raw material, were loved by creators. In response, our technical team reformulated the recipe from the ground up, creating a new range developed with a higher percentage of premium raw materials to offer improved performance and reliability.
At the heart of our new formulation is the exclusive Coombe Fireclay, sourced from the Birch Coppice clay mine in South Staffordshire. Available only to Potclays, this highly refractory fireclay is rich in iron, contributing both strength and character to the body. When fired to specific temperatures, a subtle light fleck adds visual interest without overpowering glazes or surface decoration.
