What is Casting Slip?
Casting slip is a finely tuned liquid clay that is used in slip casting. Slip casting is a technique where slip is poured into plaster moulds, drawing moisture from the slip and gradually forming clay shells that can be removed and fired. This allows for intricate shapes and repeatable forms, making it a popular process.
Our casting slips are deflocculated - meaning the clay particles have been treated to repel each other and allowing the liquid to flow smoothly, helping to reduce shrinkage and allowing for reliable release from moulds.
Self-hardening Casting Slips
We offer self-hardening casting slips like the Flumo Self-Hardening Slip. This option is ideal for those who do not have access to kilns as it offers a unique self-hardening formula that sets solid without any need for firing. Perfect for model making, sculpting or even creating prototypes, this slip retains surface detail well and dries to a smooth, easy-to-handle finish. Once air dried, it can be decorated with acrylic or water-based paints.
Useful for artists working with modelling tools or looking to build texture before applying colour, the Flumo slip provides flexibility for surface decoration despite not accepting traditional underglazes or stains. These slips are available in 1 litre containers and are ideal for makers of dolls and miniatures.
