Why Use Glaze Additives?

In ceramic glazing, additives are used to fine-tune the working qualities of glazes and slips, improving how the mixture behaves - from the way it brushes onto ware to how it settles, dries, and ultimately fires.

Additives like gum solutions and binders prevent settling of heavier particles, reduce dusting and enhance the glaze's overall consistency. For potters working with powdered raw materials, these products are beneficial in maintaining even suspensions. This helps to avoid defects such as uneven coverage.

They can also be used to adjust viscosity and surface tension, offering artists greater control over layering, colour blending, and intricate decoration.

Using Binders and Other Media

Binders and other media take glaze control a step further, acting as a bridge between dry materials and the ceramic surface. They improve adhesion and surface quality without impacting colour or texture.

Pehatine Brushing Medium enhances smooth application and flow, while AMACO Gum Solution strengthens glaze layers and helps them to stay intact through drying and handling. These products are handy when working with underglazes, oxides and stains.

Used sparingly, binders and media can bring flexibility and precision to your glazing process.
